Much has been written about mental health in the past and also in the present, but what this article will attempt to do is to appraise what the future holds for mental health and those affected by it. This article will present an overview of the effects of mental health on people, businesses and society as whole as well as causes and solutions to mental health.
According to the world health organization (W.H.O) mental health has been defined as a leading cause of disability. Having said this, it will be important to note that various mental health disorders has taken its toll on individuals, family, economy and society at large.
Before proceeding, let me state here and now that this article is not about mocking or shaming those who are affected by this various mental disorders. We are going to start by looking at the different types of mental disorders that has been proven scientifically.

We can go on and on about these mental health disorders but we will limit our analysis to its effects on family, business and people. For everything and anything we can say, we cannot shy away from the fact that the covid 19 pandemic has only worsened the effects of mental health on people and businesses.
An example of the negative effect on people is the recent global lockdown as a result of the covid 19 virus, we all know that it is people all over the world that drives businesses either micro or macro businesses. Economic survival has been known to be the most important factor in the survival of the human race, and a lack of economic activities can trigger mental health disorder in whatever form or shape.
Economic activities that generates a form of income legally drives the need for man or woman to provide food, shelter and other sundry needs for their families and generation next. Failure to be able to achieve this can drive people to the edge of mental health ills.
It has been discovered that social isolation which can be ascribed to this present global lockdown is one of the leading causes of mental health disorders. Humans by very nature are social animals and the lack of this social form interaction in society can also contribute to the rising cases of mental health disorder globally. Simply put, the lockdown which( i believe is necessary) is affecting people around the world couple with the lack of economic activities only serve as a very bad combination.
Business Organizations :
We can not overestimate the devastation that this covid 19 pandemic has wrought on the economic landscape globally. Businesses are shutting down one after the other, companies are declaring bankruptcies at an alarming rate, all these despite the fact that governments all over the world have rolled out and are still rolling out economic stimulus packages to shore up the global economy, yet businesses are still struggling in every country of the world. The struggle to survive amongst these businesses is enough to trigger mental health issues among CEO’S, executive board members or business owners generally.
Causes of mental health disorders.

- Experiencing Discrimination and Stigma
- Unemployment or Job Loss.
If one looks critically at the causes of mental health disorders enumerated above, one would easily see the link to the various types of mental health disorders. What this simply means is that mental health disorder can be a three way connection, it means mental health disorder can happen based on family, social interaction, unemployment or business loss.
Solutions to mental health disorders.
- Talk openly about mental health.
- Educate yourself and others.
- Choose empowerment over shame.
- Encourage equality between physical and mental health.
- Interact and mingle socially.
Lets remember that in this special and trying times globally, we have each other to lean on. We can only be stronger together.
