A Canadian man set a new world record by consuming three Carolina Reaper chili peppers dubbed the “world’s hottest” by Guinness in under 10 seconds.
Mike Jack downed all three peppers in just 9.72 seconds in November, Guinness World Records said. Guinness recently shared a video showing Jack setting the impressive new mark. In the clip, Jack can be seen coughing and clenching his face after he quickly eats the peppers. “It feels so good, but hurts so bad at the same time,” Jack says in the video. “My eyes are crying, but I’m happy on the inside.” The peppers each had to weigh 5 grams or more to qualify for the record, Guinness said.
This is the fourth world record set by Jack, but the first involving Carolina Reaper chili peppers, according to CNN. His previous three records each involved ultra-spicy Bhut Jolokia chili peppers, including one he set two years ago that saw him eat three in 9.75 seconds.
I hope that people who pull stunts like consuming a fresh super hot pepper pod actually do so with food in their stomachs. The potential stomach cramps associated with the possibility of eating a fresh hot pepper pod on an empty stomach does not sound appealing.
