Woman comes home to find her 3 sons shot; boyfriend arrested

An Ohio man is being held on $5 million bond after allegedly shooting his girlfriend’s three small sons, two of them fatally, and leaving the third child in critical condition.

Their mother, 23-year-old Crystal Phillips, ran out for an hour on Saturday to do errands, leaving her boyfriend in charge of the kids she shared with her estranged husband. She came back to a parent’s worst nightmare.

Her three sons, Gabriel Phillips, 1; Ahmir Phillips, 5, and Ashtan Phillips, 4 – had been shot. The first two died of their wounds, the Lucas County Coroner’s Office told The Blade. Ashtan was shot in the right side of his jaw, and the bullet went straight through, exiting on his left side, Phillips told the newspaper Monday. He had progressed from critical to stable condition and “continues to fight for his life,” police said in a statement.

Investigators believed that the pair had argued before Crystal Phillips, who also goes by the surname Andrews, left the apartment. But she said there had been no acrimony between them, and she’d never dreamed they’d be in danger.

“I really have no clue what happened,” Phillips told The Toledo Blade. “We weren’t on bad terms. There was no violence, there was nothing.”

Moore had a history of violence and run-ins with the law in Florida, The Blade reported, including a 2017 conviction for “third-degree felony domestic battery by strangulation, second-degree felony tampering with a witness, and misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence.”

On Monday, Judge Amy Berling set bond at $2 million for each murder charge and $1 million for the felonious assault, another hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Meanwhile a vigil was held for the three boys on Saturday evening, with people coming from all over to drop off stuffed animals, flowers, balloons and snacks including Cheetos, one of the boys’ favorites, reported WTOL-TV.
