Record number of migrants make their way to Spain’s Cueta enclave

In what has become a hotspot for African migrants, local officials in Spain’s Cueta enclave said that at least 2,700 migrants reached the enclave in a single day, setting a new record.

The Cueta enclave sits right next to Morocco on a tiny piece of land. Most of the migrants who arrived there are from Morocco. According to Spanish media, the border guards in Morocco did nothing to stop anyone from crossing the border.a group of people standing next to a body of water: Spanish Guardia Civil officers try to stop people from Morocco entering into the Spanish territory at the border of Morocco and Spain, at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Monday, May 17. According to the BBC, preliminary reports from Monday indicated that more than 100 people had gone around the coast of Cueta to the north side of the enclave. More migrants followed that same path but instead reached the south side.

Arriving migrants were taken into a reception center, but more soon made the journey and the number of migrants soon became too high and officials are warning that more could be on their way.a group of people standing in a rocky area: A woman from Morocco arrives at the beach after swimming crossing into the Spanish territory, near the border of Morocco and Spain at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Monday, May 17. In addition to the sharp rise in migration to Cueta, the European Union border organization, Frontex, is reporting that illegal migration is increasing in Spain’s Canary Islands near Morocco.

Morocco and Spain are currently embattled in a tense relationship. Many Moroccans are angry that Western Sahara freedom fighter and leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali has been receiving medical care in a Spanish hospital.
