Police did not divulge the name of the man, though he was arrested, Jersey City spokesperson Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione told CNN. He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

“Thank you JCPD,” wrote Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop on Instagram alongside a picture of an officer holding the baby. “Today, the JCPD got a call that a child was in danger. They responded to the call and at that point they saw a male threatening to throw a baby from the second story of the building.”

While cops set up a negotiation perimeter, it didn’t do the trick.

“Eventually the man did throw the 1-month-old baby from the second story of the building,” Fulop wrote. “The officers at the scene reacted quickly and were able to catch the baby. Thankfully the baby wasn’t harmed physically.”

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office singled out Officer Eduardo Matute, who caught the baby, and had praise for Officer Joseph Casey and Incident Commander Capt. Michael McKerry for their “actions and bravery” in their response to the harrowing situation.

The baby was taken to a local hospital and found to be unharmed.

“JCPD officers went above and beyond the call of duty once again, saving the life of a 1-month-old baby under extremely stressful circumstances today,” Jersey City’s official account tweeted. “Thank you to all of our JCPD officers for your service.”
