A Texas man who joined the US Capitol riot armed with a holstered pistol and threatened his own children to keep quiet about his role has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison. Guy Reffitt, 49, was found guilty in March on five felony counts, including obstruction of an official proceeding and interfering with police in a riot. Tragic: Child and parents shot dead while camping

A six-year-old girl and her parents have been shot dead while camping in the US state of Iowa, police have said. The bodies of Sarah and Tyler Schmidt, both 42, and their daughter Lula were found in their tent in the Maquoketa Caves State Park. The couple’s nine-year-old son survived the attack, a neighbour said. Police believe the suspected shooter, a 23-year-old man, then turned the gun on himself. His body was also found in the park. A fast-moving wildfire in California continues to grow in size, firefighters say, as they struggle through sweltering temperatures. A 10-year-old girl who police say shot and killed a woman who allegedly fought with her mother has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
